The Captial of Dreams, by Heather O'Neil, Chapter: Babes in the woods. "Sophie wondered if hating your family made it easier to survive in the war."
This was an odd book, with thoughtful but confusing parts...
Alva's Three Words
On the day Alva was born, she shocked the grownups in the delivery room. The one minute old girl clearly said the words, "Tax the Rich."
Alva's parents took her home. Fromher carseat, tiny Alva chanted
Tax the Rich
Tax the Rich
Tax the Rich
The infant Alva spend a lot of time with a pacifier in her mouth.
Alva, like all children, learned by observing. She soon learned that "Tax the Rich" was not something to say aloud in public.
Alva studied in schoo and kept her mouth shut and all too soon she entered the work force. She worked hard. She had enough to eat. She had a home. She had many small comforts. But she noticed that many peole did not have enough to eat, or a place to sleep, or any type of comfort at all.
"Things are complicated," said her teachers and her bosses and the minister.
"The economy is a complex."
"There have always been rich people and poor people."
But Alva wondered if thing were really so. In the back of her mind, she remembered those first three words."
So she ran for President.
And when she was President, she
Taxed
The
Rich.
And things got better.
